S-MTX methylation of toluene and methanol to xylene is a new type of xylene production technology combining the coal chemical industry and petrochemical industry. Methylation technology uses methanol as an alkylating agent to react with toluene to produce xylene which can achieve the purpose of increasing xylene production and maximizing the utilization of toluene under the condition that the aromatic raw materials are basically unchanged, and is one of the process technologies to effectively adjust the product structure of benzene and xylene.

The toluene methylation technology developed by Shanghai Institute has independent intellectual property rights, has been authorized by China for more than 20 invention patents, and won the first prize in Sinopec Science and Technology Progress. S-MTX Toluene Methylation Technology

 

S-MTX toluene methanol methylation technology, using MTX series toluene methylation catalyst, has the following technical characteristics:

◆ Simple reaction process: multi-stage layer type fixed bed reaction process, Methanol feeding in stages can effectively control the the temperature rise of the bed and improve the utilization rate of methyl.

◆ Catalyst renewable: MTX series catalyst has good hydrothermal stability and can be repeated.

◆ Xylene quality: reaction product C. The content of ethylbenzene in A is low, and the content of impurities in C, A aromatic is low, which can be directly incorporated into the downstream xylene separation unit.

◆ Energy saving and environmental protection: reliable reaction heat control scheme, optimized energy-saving heat exchange network, flexible working mode, and complete environmental protection measures.

◆ High operating flexibility: toluene/benzene can be fed separately or mixed.

The main technical indicators of the MTX methylation catalyst developed by the Shanghai Institute are as follows:

◆ Toluene/methanol 2/1-1/1 (mol/mol)

◆ Weight airspeed ≤5h

◆ Toluene conversion rate ≥40%

◆ C8A Selectivity ≥80%

◆ EB/C8A ≤0.1%

 

Promotion and Application

 

In 2012, the 200,000 tons/year toluene methylation unit was ssuccessfully world. The device uses a TX-1000 methylation catalyst, and the xylene product is successfully incorporated into the aaromatics combineddevice.
