Ethanol is a renewable resource, using it as a raw material to produce ethylbenzene, can reduce carbon dioxide emissions and improve the green degree of ethylbenzene products, but because the reaction produces a lot of water it very easily leads to rapid inactivation of molecular sieve catalyst, ethanol to ethylbenzene technology has not made a break through in the international for a long time. Through a number of technological innovations, Shanghai Institute has successfully developed DF-AS series ethanol to ethylbenzene catalysts and complete sets of processes with high activity and high hydrothermal stability and has taken the lead in realizing industrialization in the world.

 

Complete technology for producing ethylbenzene from ethanol

 

Ethyl benzene is synthesized by gas-phase alkylation with benzene and ethanol as raw materials, and its technical characteristics are as follows:

◆ High flexibility of raw materials: ethanol raw materials can be used including bioethanol, coal-based ethanol, and biomass ethanol, benzene raw materials can be used petroleum benzene, hydrogenated benzene, and coking benzene.

◆ Less side reactions: The multi-stage adiabatic fixed bed reaction process with cold excitation of raw materials between stages can effectively control the bed temperature rise and inhibit the generation of by-products.

◆ High product purity: The separation and coupling process of efficient removal of product water and impurities is used to obtain high-purity ethylbenzene products.

 

Ethanol to ethylbenzene series catalysts

 

At present, the brand of ethanol to ethylbenzene catalyst is a DF-AS series catalyst and the main product features are as follows:

◆ High activity: ethanol conversion close to 100%;

◆ High selectivity: xylene and recombinant impurities are less, ethylbenzene product purity >99.7%;

◆ High stability: catalyst regeneration cycle is more than 12 months, service life is more than 24 months;

◆ Strong anti-impurity ability: the catalyst has strong anti-sulfur, anti-water and coking ability;

◆ Environmentally friendly: the catalyst has no harmful components or corrosive components, does not pollute the environment, and is renewable.

 

Popularization and Application

 

In 2007, the DF-AS series catalyst was successfully applied to the industrial demonstration plant of ethylbenzene in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province, which used coking benzene and bioethanol as raw materials.

In 2009, the DF-AS series catalyst was successfully applied to the 215,000 tons/year ethylbenzene plant in Heze, Shandong Province.
