Overview
Polyglycolic acid (PGA) is a polyester polymer material with the lowest carbon number, melting point 220-224, the glass transition temperature of 35-40. It has good biocompatibility and biodegradability and can be degraded in the body by hydrolysis, producing glycolic acid, and then further degraded in the body into water and carbon dioxide, etc. As a result, it has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in human implants and is certified as a safe biodegradable plastic material in the US, Europe, and Japan.
PGA is widely used in high-value-added products such as medical absorbable surgical sutures. PGA also has excellent gas resistance and mechanical strength, and it is also used in gas-blocking packaging materials and oilfield-fracturing balls.
Ethyl ester preparation technology
Glycolic acid (ester) was used as raw material to prepare glycolic ester by the route of "pre-polymerization depolymerization-refining".
◆ Depolymerization process: effectively reduces the coking rate of the reaction system at high temperatures.
◆ Refining process: ethyl ester product purity is high (>99.5%), reaching polymerization level.
◆ Through the mold test process, obtain qualified ethyl ester.
PGA preparation and processing technology
◆ Continuous polymerization: Compared with traditional batch kettle polymerization, the polymerization time can be reduced from several hours to less than 15 minutes.
◆ The intrinsic viscosity of PGA is >1.0dL/g, the residual is <1wt% and the mechanical properties are comparable to those of imported products.
◆ The whole process of PGA melt-spinning process was successfully opened and PGA filament was obtained.

Popularization and Application
At present, the pilot process package has been developed and the surgical sutures have been successfully produced.
