Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a water-soluble polymer with excellent oxygen barrier properties. Due to its poor melt fluidity and narrow processing window, PVA makes it difficult to prepare thin film products by melt extrusion process. Through in-depth research on the extrusion process and product formulation, Shanghai Institute has developed a "one-step" continuous extrusion process to prepare thermoplastic polyvinyl alcohol (TPVA), which has expanded the application field of PVA. TPVA has excellent processability and can be used to prepare a variety of packaging materials by dry casting, blown film, multi-layer co-extrusion, and other molding processes.

The TPVA technology of "one-step" continuous extrusion preparation can melt processing has novelty, and the project has applied for 17 Chinese invention patents.

 

"One-step method" TPVA preparation technology

 

Through the study of the interaction between non-thermoplastic PVA molecules and thermoplasticizermolecules of different structures and scales, the study of thermomechanical stress on the aggregated structure ofTPVA during continuous thermoplasticization and the development of special equipment, The key engineering problems such as PVA non-flow and narrow processing window, dispersion and distribution control of the multi-component system and water-free cooling and devolatilization are solved. Developed the first set of "one-step" water-soluble TPVA and barrier TPVA technology in China. Two TPVA technologies have reached the international advanced level.

Its technical characteristics are as follows:

◆ High efficiency: Compared with the aqueous solution forming method, TPVA can use dry casting, film blowing, multi-layer-extrusion, and other forming processes to prepare products.

◆ Low cost: The TPVA process uses less energy than the aqueous solution-forming method.

◆ It can prepare multilayer films and 3D injection molded products.

◆ The preparation process is green, low carbon, and environmental protection.

According to the application, TPVA products are divided into water-soluble film application and barrier packaging film application, the main features of the product are as follows:

◆ Compared with foreign products, water-soluble film products have low yellowness value, good transparency, and excellent aging resistance.

◆ Water soluble film products can be adjusted in the range of 60 to 1200 seconds.

◆ TPVA film has excellent barrier property: <5cm/m2·day·atm, which can effectively extend the shelf life of the contents.

◆ Film ductility is not easy to damage: film elongation >300%.

◆ Film is not easy to tear, not easy to damage: tear strength >400gf

◆ Soft film low noise: modulus <150 Mpa.

 

Popularization and Application

 

TPVA preparation technology has been tested in Sinopec Chuanwei Chemical and Ningxia Chemical Co., LTD., and the scale of the unit line has reached 2000 tons per year. At present, the product is being marketed.
