Overview
Ethylene tar is a high-boiling liquid phase product produced by cracking raw materials in the process of steam cracking to ethylene. It is a heavy distillate-rich in aromatics, accounting for about 1/5 of ethylene production. It mainly contains monocyclic, polycyclic, and dense aromatic components, which are complex in compositions to polymerize, high in gum, heavy metal, and ash content, and can not be directly used. The ethylene tar hydrogenation technology is based on a two-stage hydrogenation process: the first stage uses low-temperature liquid phase hydrogenation to remove easily polymerized substances, and the second stage uses high-temperature hydrogenation to saturate monofin and remove sulfur, nitrogen, and other impurities, to achieve stability, refinement, and appreciation of low-value cracking byproducts. The product can be used as solvent oil or as raw material for aromatic hydrocarbon production. Since 2015, Shanghai Petrochemical Research Institute has conducted a comprehensive study on the hydrogenation of ethylene tar and has successfully developed SHN-D01 series and SHp-D02 series catalysts. Based on the above catalyst Shanghai Institute successfully developed a complete set of ethylene tar hydrogenation utilization technology.
The project has obtained more than 40 Chineseauthorized invention patents.
Complete technology for hydrogenation utilization of ethylene tar
Technical features are as follows:
◆ A wide range of raw materials can be used for cracking heavy fractions, reforming heavy aromatics, and other inferior heavy raw materials.
◆ The deeper hydrogenation of the first stage, the more complete removal of DCPD (bicyclopentadiene).
◆ The second stage hydrofining process is highly selective deep hydrofining, and the naphthalene series compounds are selected to hydrogenate to single-ring saturated tetrahydronaphthalene series, which maximizes the retention of aromatics reduces hydrogen consumption, and provides high-quality raw materials for increasing aromatics production.
◆ The product program is flexible, and the product can be used as high-quality aromatic solvent oil, for blending oil or cracking raw materials such as BTX and low-carbon alkane to increase the production of aromatic raw materials through the hydrocracking process.

At present, the main brands of ethylene tar hydrogenation catalysts include a SHN-D01, a SHP-D02 series catalysts and the main product features are as follows:
◆ High activity: SHN-DO1 series catalyst was used, and the inlet temperature was 60~80℃, and the bromine value of the first stage product was < 25gBr/100g oil; With SHPD02 series catalyst, under relatively mild reaction conditions, the conversion of the naphthalene series in the second stage product was >95%. Bromine value of hydrogenated product <0.5gBr/100g oil, sulfur, nitrogen <1.0ppm.
◆ High selectivity: Using SHN-DO1 series catalyst, the DCPD of a stage product <1%; Using SHP-D02 series catalyst, the selectivity of the tetrahydronaphthalene series is >92% under relatively mild reaction conditions, and the operation stability of the device is good.
◆ Environmentally friendly: The catalyst has no harmful components and corrosive components do not pollute the environment, and is renewable.
Popularization and Application
The complete set of ethylene tar hydrogenation technology was successfully applied in the 60,000 tons/year ethylene tar hydrogenation industrial plant in 2019. At present, the industrial plant runs stably, and the product quality is excellent, and the by-product appreciation effect is obvious.
